Who We Are
Imagine Swimming is NYC's premier learn-to-swim school, and we’re expanding to Montauk in the Summer of 2025! Since 2002, we’ve shared our love of the water with swimmers of all ages, from infants to adults. Founded by Olympian Casey Barrett and German National Team member Lars Merseburg, Imagine Swimming brings together a diverse and passionate team dedicated to inspiring confidence and joy in the water.
At Imagine, we believe that learning to swim should be fun. Our child-led, creative approach encourages students to develop skills through engaging, play-based lessons. While our teaching methods are highly developed, we value individuality—because it’s the Singer, not the Song that makes each lesson special.

OUR APPROACH — Imagine Swimming adheres to the teachings of Reggio Emilia method of education, an Italian educational philosophy that places emphasis on focusing on the child, fostering imagination and encouraging their interaction with the natural world. Many of New York City’s top preschools have adopted this principle in their curriculum and we see this best expressed in the water – where every sense is engaged and the opportunities for exploration, and growth, are endless.
With highly-developed teaching methods and rigorous training, it's the teachers - in the moment - who must pass along this love and knowledge of swimming long-term. Our 80-person instructor team reflect the New York City community itself—diverse, ambitious, top notch, and we consider ourselves fortunate to celebrate the aquatic world together. Sharing this love of the water is at the core of swim lessons at Imagine, rooted in play and creativity, and informs our mantra: Safe. Fun. For life.
